The "Top-Gun" Bike

A PHOTO JOURNEY FOLLOWING THE BUILDING OF THE TOP GUN BIKE
By BOB JONES

Pictures in this series appear in an album book, which is prepared for the new owner of every Bob Jones Custom XS Eleven motorcycle made since 2005. Prior to that time these books were not furnished and pictures were not taken as the bikes were built. This has now become a standard practice to show proof to the purchaser that he or she is getting exactly what the bike is stated to be and what has been done to create it.

All complete custom XS Eleven motorcycles built by Bob Jones are warranted for one year with no limit on mileage. This shows the confidence we have in these units that we feel will last 50 years in service from the time we sell it. In the opinion of the builder, "no other motorcycle has such longevity". Such a machine will obviously never be made again by any OEM to assure they will have return business from their customers in the future due to planned obsolescence. This was not a practice when the XS Eleven was created in the late 1970's. Even though the bike was close to perfect at that time. Bob Jones has upgraded many systems with later technology and made the best bike of all time even better. Since these units will last a lifetime, prices are actually irrelevant. Owners will never need to suffer depreciation because there will never be a need to replace the bike with anything else. Most buyers end up adding another or 2nd unit set up in another style if anything.

The bike pictured here was purchased new in Japan in 1980 by, we believe, a Navy Fighter pilot and brought back to the US on an aircraft carrier. It was later licensed and titled in Nevada and a base sticker NAS Fallon, Nevada was on the left fork leg when we received the bike from a later owner with a Utah title. This is the Navy's Top Gun School for fighter pilot training. Since I was in the Navy air arm in the fifties and early sixties, I put this all together and realized how this bike got to the states. It has Japanese writing on the front master cylinder cap, so it was definitely sold there when new.

When building it I called it the Top Gun Bike and it stuck. It has all custom paint and graphics in red and black, a Bob Jones designed two part look pillow top button and tuck flat black seat, which contrasts the clear urethane solid black tank that has a white Custom XS Eleven by Bob Jones graphic under the gas cap. Using a high polished fork brace, lower fork legs and muffler/peg hangers and #1201 progressive rear shocks/ chrome springs to enhance the newly high polished wheel rims and spoke edges. The wheels are trimmed with 1/8" red pinstripes along with the brake disc rotors to match the seat rail stripe and red tank/side cover emblems and fork emblem. The original pull back handlebars were replaced with a set of LTD. Flanders bars like the Standard XS Eleven uses This increases the controllability and handling coupled with all of the new suspension parts. The engine was completely freshened up with a valve job, decarboned pistons and a modified transmission 2nd gear, then restyled in gloss black crankcases and cylinder block topped with a red cylinder head and polished cooling fins. The carburetors were rebuilt like new and painted red bodies with polished caps and float bowls. A K&N air cleaner was used in the air box. The wiring harness was gone through and refurbished like new with a new fuse box. Case guards and highway pegs were added. A Jardine 4-1 exhaust system painted in red 1300-degree paint and a chrome oval muffler was used in place of the old pipe. After all of this you'd think there was nothing else to improve, but you would be wrong. A whole new dashboard was created. A 160 mph speedometer replace the 85 mph OEM Speedo and the black rims on both Speedo and Tach were polished like chrome. Then an aluminum sheet metal panel was made to fit under and around the two large instruments with a 2" hole on each side where a fuel gauge was installed at the right and a voltmeter at the left. The panel was then trimmed in chrome edging. This gave the look of a sports car dash perfectly balanced with two large and two small gauges. Black rubber housings were added to the back of the small meters to keep the weather out and hide wiring etc. It made the bike look into a class all it's own. After, all of the brakes were rebuilt. Outer engine covers all high polished like chrome. A set of Metzler tires were fitted to round of the package and the bars were accented with black/red gel grips and black bar end weights.
